Member of Parliament for Scarborough—Guildwood
September 28, 2023 Newsletter
October 31, 2023

Dear Friends,

On September 18th, the House of Commons resumed in session. I am looking forward to be back in Ottawa and continue the important work we are doing to represent the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood.

Earlier this month, the federal government announced the plan to incentivize building much-needed rental homes by removing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the construction of new apartment buildings for renters and encouraging provinces to do the same. The government will continue to be relentless in their efforts to meet this generational challenge and make housing more affordable for people.

Once again, we are inviting the community to submit photographic images of Scarborough Guildwood for the 2024 community calendar. If you are selected, your photo along with your name will be published in the next John McKay community calendar for 2024! For more information, check below.

Finally, I wish you and your family a beautiful fall.

As Chair of the National Defence Committee, I was privileged to lead a delegation of fellow Parliamentarians to Latvia, Estonia, the United Kingdom, and Poland to witness the remarkable work of our troops.

In Latvia, we had the opportunity to meet with our Canadian troops who are leading NATO's enhanced Forward Presence and visited the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.

In Poland, we were privileged to witness the American military who is at the forefront of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence, working diligently to maintain safety and security.

In Estonia, we observed the work of the British troops at NATO's enhanced Forward Presence.

Lastly, in the United Kingdom, we gained firsthand insight on the remarkable work of the Canadian Armed Forces in their role in Operation Unifier, training Ukrainian recruits.

Our annual community picnic was a resounding success! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this event. It was a pleasure connecting with constituents and sharing in the spirit of our wonderful community.

A huge thank you and congratulations to our Volunteer Appreciation Award recipients:
  1. Pam Spence
  2. Mr. Weiguang Wu
  3. Mark Steele
  4. Kassam Varwani
  5. Farzan Farook
  6. Renisha Correa

I am delighted to share with you the latest episode of my podcast series, What We Give. This episode features Rev. Dr. Andrew P.W. Bennett, Director of Cardus Faith Communities at Cardus, Canada’s faith-based think-tank and ordained deacon in the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church.

Andrew has served in numerous leadership positions throughout his life, including Canada's first Ambassador for Religious Freedom and Head of the Office of Religious Freedom from 2013 to 2016. I was pleased to speak to him about his role in bridging the gap between religion and politics.

The Juno Beach Maple Leaves for Juno 80 campaign is an initiative that ensures there is always a pristine Maple Leaf flying at the Juno Beach Centre and across the country.

The Juno Beach Centre is focused on raising funds for the Faces of Canada Today exhibition renewal project. This exhibit will better present the whole of modern Canada, including the role of Indigenous peoples, the post-war waves of diverse immigrants, and how our nation grew out of the values Second World War veterans brought when they returned to build a better, more welcoming, and peaceful Canada during the post-war decades.

As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy in 2024, they anticipate Juno Beach Maple Leaves flying across the country.

In communities all across Canada this year, young people have been benefitting from the more than 190,000 jobs the Federal government created for them.

For young people aged 15 to 30, the Canada Summer Jobs programs helps employers hire youth. This year alone, the program filled more than 70,000 positions.

The Liberal government's other initiatives include the Student Work Placement Program, which helps post-secondary students find paid experience in their field of study. The Youth Employment and Skills Strategy funds organizations that deliver activities and services to help youth overcome barriers and develop their skill set to join the labour force, helping to level the playing field for the next generation of Canada’s workforce.
