Community Update: July 7, 2023

Dear Friends,

I hope you and your family had a very safe and Happy Canada Day!

June 21st was the final day of this Parliamentary session. The House of Commons is adjourned until September 18, 2023. In just 15 weeks, the House passed 15 historic bills that will help make life more affordable, safeguard our environment, protect the public safety of Canadians, and advance our commitment to reconciliation. Some of the highlights of this session were:

  • Bill C-18: An Act respecting online communications platforms that make news content available to persons in Canada;
  • Bill C-21: An Act to amend certain Acts and to make certain consequential amendments (firearms);
  • Bill C-22: An Act to reduce poverty and to support the financial security of persons with disabilities by establishing the Canada disability benefit and making a consequential amendment to the Income Tax Act;
  • Bill C-35: An Act respecting early learning and child care in Canada.
Although Parliament is out-of-session, my constituency office is always available to assist you with federal issues.

Finally, I wish you and your family a very enjoyable and restful summer.

Beautiful day to join Masaryktown's 75th anniversary celebration and participate in their annual Czech and Slovak Festival in Scarborough! Wonderful performances, food, and people!

Proud to be a part of a Citizenship ceremony and address new citizens to Scarborough - Guildwood. It is always a pleasure to welcome new Canadian citizens to our country and community.

Happy Canada Day!

I was pleased to participate in a World Vision celebration of the passage of Bill S-211. World Vision has been assiduously working on Forced & Child Labour since 2009, and Bill S-211 marks an important milestone in the fight against this odious practice.

Helping create a friendlier future for Canadian families by packing TELUS Kits for Kids. I’m pleased to help these school supplies reach youth in need living in Scarborough—Guildwood!

Our price on pollution not only fights climate change, it puts more money in families’ pockets. The Pollution Price Rebate means payments going to people every three months.

On July 14th, the summer payment goes out, worth: $244 for a family of four in Ontario.

Guild Alive with Culture Arts Festival is back Saturday, July 22 – Sunday, July 23 from 10 am – 5 pm at Guild Park and Gardens, 201 Guildwood Parkway, Scarborough.

My office will be setting up an information table (mobile office) at this event, so please be sure to drop by!

The Federal government is taking action to prevent hate-motivated crime and keep our community gathering spaces safe.

That is why on June 28th, 2023, Minister Mendicino launched the Security Infrastructure Program (SIP) 2023 Call for Applications. This round will allocate $5 million in funding, and will accept applications until August 31, 2023. SIP funds up to 50% of the cost of security equipment up to a maximum of $100,000 per project.

Organizations can apply directly on Public Safety Canada’s website: Communities at Risk: Security Infrastructure Program (SIP).

The 22nd annual Scarborough Ribfest will kick off on Friday, August 4th and run until August 7th at Thomson Park

This year, 9 ribbers will be serving up their specialties including beef and pork ribs and chicken, along with cornbread and beans. Other vendors will be serving delicious treats from around the world. The carnival will be back with rides, games, and more vendors in the craft area as you enter the event!

I am delighted to share with you my latest podcast series episodes on What We Give. It highlights the remarkable ways incredible people in our community work to better the lives of everyday Canadians.
