Dear Friends,

My colleagues MPP Mitzie Hunter and Councillor Paul Ainslie were joined by Dr. Jeffrey Schiffer, the Executive Director at Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, for our Virtual Town Hall. We wrestled with some difficult questions posed by constituents around the unmarked gravesites of Indigenous children and peoples.

For many, this devastating discovery was a rude awakening to the dissonance between our image of Canada and its historical realities that have been buried far too long. These are difficult times that call for a reckoning and a meditation on what the path to truth and reconciliation looks like.

With Canada Day just around the corner, I encourage you to reflect on our country's history and to mark the occasion with Canada's shared values of kindness, consideration and thoughtfulness.

However you decide to spend this Thursday, I encourage you to continue to follow the new local public health measures outlined by the Government of Ontario and invite you to explore the following resources:

National Indigenous History Month

We began National Indigenous History Month learning the horrific news of the undisclosed graves of 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School and 751 unmarked graves at a former Saskatchewan residential schools site.

This month is dedicated to the missing children, the families left behind and the survivors of residential schools, and to recognizing the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

I invite non-Indigenous community members to learn more about the culture and history of Indigenous peoples this month here
